The people around you see the good and can’t figure out what you’d have to complain about. Your neighbors, your friends, half your family. They don’t get why you are the way you are when you’re chasing something big, and after a while you stop trying to explain it to them.

So you post the blessed part and keep the hard part to yourself. Then you feel like an asshole for even having a hard part.

My buddy @stefanossifandos is one of those people

My buddy @stefanossifandos is one of those people who doesn’t know how to do anything at half speed.

First morning in Park City he goes, here’s what we’re doing. He knew I’d had shoulder and bicep surgery. He knew I’d been making a comeback from it and it’s been a long road. He looked at me and expected me to perform past what I thought my limitations were, right there on the spot. Didn’t care that I had surgery a year ago. Didn’t care about any of it. He said, you’re going to be fine.

I hit a personal bench press record that morning. Post-surgery record, to be clear, not pre-surgery. But it was so far past where I thought I was that I still don’t totally understand it.
I didn’t train up for it. I didn’t work up to it. I honestly didn’t even want that workout, I wanted to look at the mountains and drink more coffee.

It happened because I was standing next to somebody who operates that way, and that expectation is instantly contagious.

Now here’s the part that should bother you. That works in both directions. If a higher standard is contagious, so is a lower one, and most of you have spent years surrounded by people who don’t expect anything from you at all. Nobody’s asking for more. Nobody’s checking. You’re the boss.

Your standard has been drifting down for a while and there is nobody in your life whose job it is to tell you.
