Fifteen years later I still think about those clea Fifteen years later I still think about those cleaners more than almost any hire we’ve ever made. Here’s the equation. We were trading ninety three dollars a week worth of energy for tens of thousands of dollars a week worth of production from the energy we got back. And the reason people don’t do it is never really the money. It’s that spending money on it feels irresponsible, so you keep doing it yourself and call that discipline. What’s the one you’re still doing that you know you shouldn’t be?
A 23 year old asked me last week if he has to move A 23 year old asked me last week if he has to move to LA to make it. Here’s what I told him. Lori and I lived in LA for nine years and about six of them made us. Put us on the map, grew our dreams, made all the intros, made the friendships we still use today. When you live there you get the call that says come watch the sunset, come grill. Hey, I’ve got an extra ticket to the Lakers game tonight, you around? You do not get that call when you live ninety minutes south, and you get nothing at all when you live a state over. We moved and it dried up. So proximity is real and opportunity is real. But there’s a second lever, and it’s where you actually thrive. You can be standing in the middle of the most opportunity on earth and be a worse version of yourself the entire time you’re there. You have to pull both levers. And sometimes the answer isn’t obvious, isn’t convenient, and isn’t affordable. You still have to go find it. If you can’t have a hundred percent of the proximity right now, go get eighty. Get in the rooms a few times a year instead of never. Where are you on those two levers right now?

Loyalty, manners, respect, gratitude. All standard issue back then, and all of it free. Bring those back too and I’ll wear the windbreaker.
